The McManus I Revealing Characters

Albert Square,

Portraiture is the theme of a new, two-part exhibition at The McManus in Dundee, drawn from the city’s ne art collection. Revealing Characters looks beneath the surface to uncover the stories of the people on display who have been captured for posterity, some for their achievements in the arts, science and politics, from Nobel prize-winners to Turner prize-winners, others mainly artists’ wives, family members and friends who were depicted merely for their availability and willingness to pose. From the painterly to the photographic, the display investigates the enduring appeal of the portrait as an art form. In contrast, Face to Face considers what makes a successful portrait beyond being a mere likeness, such as whether the face is beautifully lit, a clever use of colour or props or an expression or a vulnerability that the artist has captured.
