Park Gallery: Drawn from the Past. The Museum Mind of Tessa Asquith-Lamb

Drawn from the Past: The Museum Mind of Tessa Asquith-Lamb at the Park Gallery in Falkirk explores how the artist uses museum collections as inspiration for her own lyrical and detailed etchings and paper-cuts. She was invited to choose objects and paintings from the region’s collections and has created new work based on these items, including intricate paper-cuts and a new etching featuring Callendar House, where the gallery is based. A particular find was a 19th century cut and painted paper Valentine card, which prompted the artist to create her own versions. The first gallery space will show a selection of Tessa’s etchings and artworks alongside the objects she collects as inspiration, including 19th century toys and decorative arts, and a collection of vintage Christmas decorations, such as her glass bird collection, crackers and ceramics. A second room will feature paintings, photographs and objects from Falkirk Community Trust’s collections and the new artworks inspired by them. Tessa graduated from Edinburgh College of Art with an MA (Hons) in Fine Art. Since then she has continued to create her mysterious and poetic etchings and paper- cuts, often including her trademark fox, while working as a freelance art educator. Along with designer Martin Baillie she was recently commissioned by the V&A Dundee to create a giant paper-cut pop-up book. She says: “My etchings and paper artworks reflect my love of stories and storytelling and help me record significant emotional moments, like diary pages. Each image I create is assembled from drawings in my sketchbooks of beautiful things found in museums, in the depths of the woods, remembered moments, self-portraits and objects from my collection of Victoriana and childhood treasures. Foxes often accompany me in these images. These beautiful and wily creatures symbolise my inspiration and offer joyful encouragement.”
