David Stott - Reflections on Africa
Rain over Kilimanjaro
Working on a farm in Kirkcudbright near his family origins, David Stott began to paint, learning from the galleries of Europe while obtaining a BSc degree and teaching.
He has lived and worked for 20 years in Africa. His paintings deal consistently with the grass roots of the societies in which he has lived, from Nyerere’s Tanzania, Kenya under Jomo Kenyatta and the first euphoric years of Zimbabwe to the death of Banda’s dictatorship in Malawi.
A major theme of his work has been the cruel contrast between poverty and hardship against the physical beauty of people and places. One of his exhibitions was entitled ‘Out of the strong comes forth sweetness’.
He has described his work as partdocumentary and part-poetry. While resisting overt political comment, he has singled out African women as the most important force in society.
He has exhibited widely in Africa, represented Zimbabwe in Senegal and had major exhibitions in Nairobi, Harare, The Commonwealth Institute in London and Washington, DC. He last showed work in Edinburgh at the Calton Studios.
