Jane Hyslop & Beth Legg

Beth Legg, Fern brooch

Acclaimed artist and bookmaker Jane Hyslop and jeweller Beth Legg feature in a joint exhibition, which includes an education programme with free talks and opportunities to work with the artists in practical workshops.

Both Jane Hyslop and Beth Legg draw their inspiration from the land, showing a preoccupation with the natural world and plant forms in exquisitely executed paintings, prints, artist’s books and jewellery.

Jane Hyslop’s work explores the postindustrial landscape with a current focus on the plants which populate and regenerate derelict mines, railways, mills and the legacy they have left. A tutor at Edinburgh College of Art, Hyslop has exhibited widely and her work is held in several prestigious collections, including the National Gallery of Scotland, Tate Gallery, Manchester Metropolitan University and the Scottish Mining Museum.

A keen observer, Beth Legg explores ideas of the embedded object and memory. Drawing and photography also play an important part of her research process, allowing her to record both her developments at the bench and exterior influences drawn from different landscapes. The remote environment she comes from has strongly influenced the work she produces.
