‘Artist Rooms’, National Galleries of Scotland and Tate.
Acquired jointly through The d’Offay Donation with

Arbus is one of the great figures of American photography. She pioneered the photographic approach bridging the gap between documentary and fine art and exploring through her work the extraordinary variety which can be found in the lives, emotions and appearances of ordinary people. Her bold, direct style has been praised as a ‘celebration of things as they are’.
This first exhibition in Scotland devoted to Arbus’s art is drawn from the world class holdings of her photographs in the Artist Rooms collection, donated by Anthony d’Offay to the National Galleries of Scotland and Tate. Visitors to the Dean will see such iconic and powerful works as Child with a Toy Hand Grenade and Albino Sword Swallower as well as the rare and important portfolio of prints, ‘A Box of Ten Photographs’, assembled by Arbus at the end of her life.
A special highlight will be one of Arbus’s earliest photographs, Self-portrait pregnant from 1945, especially loaned from a private collection
