John Mackie: Making an Impression - Personal Appearance

John Mackie, Princes Street at Dusk

A graduate of the Glasgow School of Art and an exhibitor at the Royal School of Art, John Mackie is influenced by the likes of Monet, Renoir and Pissarro. While paying homage to these great Masters and observing the rules of Impressionism, he also manages to shed a modern light on the society he depicts.

Rob Hain, Gardens in Autumn

Mackie’s work possesses all of the characteristics and qualities which epitomise Impressionism, with its proud, pronounced application of paint and superb quality of light both strikingly apparent. Princes Street at Dusk (shown here) is typical of his everyday subject matter and exemplary of its roots in Impressionism. The brisk movement that we observe and associate with the rush home is another Impressionistic trait.

However, if viewed from the perspective of another generation, the scene has very little that fixes it in time or place. While depicting a modern day scene, Mackie imbues it with a timeless quality. Part of the power of Mackie’s use of light is his ability to indicate a time of day in the scene he paints. The timeless quality he perfects is quite rare among contemporary art and something that collectors will find reassuring. John Mackie will also be appearing at Breeze Art Gallery, Peebles (Fri Mar 26, 6.30-9pm), Breeze Art Gallery at Frasers, Glasgow (Sat Mar 27, 2.30-4pm) and Breeze Art Studio, Jenners at Loch Lomond Shores, Balloch (Sun Mar 28, noon-2pm)

Breeze also has a selection of scenes of Edinburgh by Rob Hain.
