SETTING This charming village inn is located in the heart of Berwickshire, a land of tranquil countryside, sandy beaches and the majestic River Tweed - an inspiring destination in which to taste the finest game and seafood from the Scottish Borders.

FOOD Owners Chris and Jan Winson have an excellent reputation for their warm welcome, comfortable, bedrooms and seriously good food. With two AA rosettes, and listings in Good Food and Michelin Guides, this is a very popular place to stay, eat and drink. The cosy pub Bar and "fishing themed" lounges are furnished with old oak settles, country pine, Bergere armchairs, artwork and a log fire.

The Restaurant menu proudly gives the provenance of food to highlight authentic, seasonal quality to promote prime Scotch beef, local farm pork and lamb, organic vegetables and the freshest seafood landed at nearby Eyemouth harbour. A starter perhaps of Asparagus, poached duck egg, drizzled with creamy hollandaise or Smoked Haddock fishcake with avocado salsa. For main course, Rack of succulent spring lamb, Dauphinoise potatoes, or juicy Rib-eye Steak, field mushrooms, hand cut chips, cooked medium rare to perfection. A Specials board offers daily market dishes such as Halibut, king prawns and scallop direct from crate to plate, and if you give 24 hours notice, you can order local lobster.

The Bar lunch and supper menu offers hearty, homely gastropub food: sublime soups, Steak and Ale pie, Haddock and chips or Beetroot and Goats cheese risotto. (Vegetarians are well catered for). Finish with a not-so-naughty Chocolate Brownie and Malteser ice-cream or Farmhouse cheese and oatcakes. The best way to enjoy the complete Wheatsheaf hospitality is to stay a night or two for a peaceful sleep and fine Scottish breakfast before exploring the Borders coastline and countryside.
