SETTING
Il Castello is in the heart of Edinburgh’s West End Theatreland, perfect for a meal before and after Curtain Up time. The simple yet elegant décor relaxes while at the same time heightens expectation. Black and white prints and neutral tones suggest quality rather than rustic. A perusal through the extensive menu will see many favourites and this friendly restaurant is a great place for families, couples, singles, old and young.
FOOD
I’m spoiled for choice. From my vantage point I see pastas, salads, meat and fish dishes arriving at neighbouring tables. Not helping my decision-making process is the unmistakeable aroma of fresh-baked pizza dough and melted mozzarella. The tables are all a-chatter until the food arrives, when talk is replaced with nods of silent approval.
I take a sip from my glass of the fruity house red and tell the waiter my evening is in his hands. Shortly after he returns with a small pile of glistening golden rings - my calamari starter. The thin batter complements rather than masks the firm white meat – as it should. Next to arrive is an Angus steak, crisp French fries and a light salad. The meat is nicely seared on the outside and as my knife slides through the wafer thin crust my taste buds dance as I see it cooked perfectly, medium rare. A pepper sauce adds a subtle kick, but does not overpower.
I take some persuading to indulge in the homemade panna cotta but soon I sit in front of my empty dessert plate.
